Unst Black Stork and a few Halls

Went looking for yesterdays Iberian Chiffchaff at Halligarth, Unst. Stood under the trees and saw and heard nothing Chiffchaff-like at all - there was no sign of it today. The Black Stork was still there however, around the Loch of Brecksie area just north of Uyeasound. As it was ringed its origins have been traced - it was originally ringed as a chick in northern Hungary (close to the Slovakian border), in June 2007. It was also seen in Hungary in 2008 and the Netherlands in 2009. For more information on this bird's wanderings click here.

Unst welcome sign and boat-shaped Glockenspiel (or metallophone). This is at the Unst Ferry terminal - Belmont. The boat has varying lenghts of metal tubing & the mallets to play it are also at the boat.

South Nesting Public Hall.

The old Lime Kiln at Girlsta. Now owned by the Shetland Amenty Trust the large kiln was built by the Lerwick based merchants Hay & Company in 1872 to burn limestone in large quantities from the adjacent quarry. The kiln and the quarry provided work for many years for many men from the area. The lime that was produced was used as fertiliser and for building projects going on in Lerwick in the last part of the 19th century. It was shipped out from the pier below. The construction of the kiln is square, it tapers slightly upwards, and is strengthened by iron rods near the top. The back is set against the hillside. In the front is an arched opening that gave access to the furnace. Inside the kiln was lined with brick. Peat and coal in vast quantities were used to fuel the massive kiln. It was capable of burning 70 tons of limestone at a time, using 14 tons of coal and 10 tons of peat for fuel. The limeworks was in use until the 1930's.

Levenwick Hall - used to be the Levenwick School until the school closed in 1969.

Levenwick Hall also has an adjacent campsite and Camper Van / Caravan park.

At the back of the hall are camp facilities including a laundry, shower and chemical toilet disposal.

There are 4 parking spaces for Camper Vans / Caravans with electrical hookups.

Theres also an old red phone box at the entrance.

Dunrossness Central Public Hall - aka Boddam Hall - opened in 1907.

At the back of the hall is the Ness Learning Centre - computer courses are run from there - I did my European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) there some years ago.
