Norwick Up Helly Aa Galley Shed

Charlie Priest very kindly allowed me access to the Norwick Up Helly Aa Galley shed to photograph the Galley & associated UHA stuff. The galley's name is Farfarer and is kept for the festival each with a secondary galley being burnt. The Norwick UHA is usually on the last Saturday in February each year and started in the mid 1980's.

An interesting shield from a previous Norwick UHA. This is identical to the Nesting & Girlsta UHA Jarl Squad shield from 1992 - except that the Raven is flying to the right on this shield, whereas in the Nesting shield it is flying to the left - a little co-operation between the two UHA's.

Bressay Up Helly Aa Galley Shed

The Bressay Up Helly Aa secretary, Stephen Anderson, very kindly allowed me access to the Galley Shed today to photograph the galley and shields. The Bressay UHA galley - BryniJen - is now 48 years old - a secondary galley is burnt at the festival each year. A big festival is planned for the 50th anniversary in 2012 when as many previous Jarls as possible will be invited to attend. Here's the pictures.

Galley shields - these are rotated so the current jarl shield goes to the front of the galley and the oldest shield is removed.

There are shields on the wall of the galley shed - here are pics of a few.
1980 Shield - Jarl - Bob Smith.

1982 Shield - Jarl - Billy Clark.

1996 Shield - Jarl - Alan Scollay.

Once again - many thanks to Stephen Anderson for access to the galley shed - more pics to follow...
